Swamy Ra Ra Movie Review March 23rd, 2013, 12:00 AM IST Movie : Swamy Ra Ra Rating: 3/5 Cast : Nikhil, Swathi, Ravi Babu, Pooja Ramachandran and others Directed by : Sudhir Varma Produced by : Chakri Chigurupati Banner : Lakshmi Narasimha Entertainments Music : Sunny Release Date : 2013-03-23

Swamy Ra Ra is a low budget film which didn't rise any expectations among the film lovers. However the film has a decent star cast to grab the attention and director Sudhir Varma made his attempt count with the limited resources he has in offer.

What is it about?

Surya (Nikhil) a pickpocketer falls in love with Swathi (Swathi), from whom he steals a bike. Swathi lands in a trouble due to a stole idol of Ganesha and Surya has a part to play in it. Now he has to save her from deadly goons who are after that invaluable idol.

Performances:

Nikhil is decent as the pick pocketer. His usual over enthusiastic nature is missing and that is a welcome change. He did well as the lead man with a neat performance. Swathi is fine as the innocent young lady. She impresses with her cool attitude. Pooja is striking as Nikhil's friend. Ravi Babu is competitive. Jeeva is routine and all others did well in their respective roles. Most of the star cast consists newcomers and all of them are good.

Technicalities:

Music by Sunny is an asset. His background score did the talking for this technically well made film. Cinematography is top notch for a film made in a very limited budget. The technical crew deserves a pat for making this technically brilliant in all aspects. Editing could have been crisper though. Dialogues penned by the director are alright. Director Sudhir Varma is an ardent fan of Ram Gopal Varma and there are many scenes and instances where he reminds you of vintage Varma. The director also is inspired by Quentin Tarantino and Guy Ritchie. The film is made in the lines of Lock Stock and two smoking barrels and Snatch. Director has a style in conceiving action scenes and it is commendable.

Analysis:

Despite all its positives, Swamy Ra Ra fails at times due to slow pace. This gets on to your nerves during few scenes. Director is fond of slow motion camera movements and he implements that style in chase sequences too. The film pleads to rush the proceedings and director took his own sweet time to wrap things up. That is the biggest minus for this film.

If you can pardon its pace, Swamy Ra Ra makes a decent watch for its premise and technical finesse. It is pretty hard to find small budget gems these days. This film is one of those rare good films in this zone. This film will impress the audience who look for some variety. The director was caught in a dilemma whether to make this a thriller or a comedy and he ended up somewhere in the middle.

If he had a clear idea about the genre and stuck to his guns this film might have been a better one. However, despite the short comings, Swamy Ra Ra is worth watching and will appeal to the target audience. It has a fair chance to work in A centers if promoted well.

Verdict: Nice work Swamy!

Banner: Studio Green

Producer: K. E. Gnanavel Raja

Director: Suraj

Music: Devi Sri Prasad

Casting: Karthi, Anushka, Francis, Santhanam, Milind Soman, Suman and Others

Rating: 2.0/5.0

Story

Alex Pandu (Karthi) who does small crimes gets involved in a big deal with Doctor GKM (Suman) and Alwyn Martyn (Milind Soman), head of Alywn Pharma and kidnaps Andhra Pradesh Health Ministers (Visu) daughter Divya (Anushka). However turn of events lands himself at Simhachalam in the house of comedian (Santhanam) and three sisters (Nikitha, Rani, Sanusha) including his mother, while Divya who gets injured get treated in nearby place. Why did he Alex Kidnap Divya and what is his motive should be found on silver screen.

Performance

There is nothing new in Karthi's performance as the character doesn't demand much from him. Same mass dances, same expressions and stunts. Anushka did not even utter a single word in the first half and in the second half she was confined to dances. She looked aged in front of Karthi. Santham did his bit as comedian while Visu, Pratap Pothan, Mahadevan, Suman, Milind Soman along with Nikitha, Rani and Sanusha tried to generate interest with their performances.

Technical

Director failed in all departments with his outdated insipid script. Editing of Praveen, Srikanth is below average, while Sashank Vennelakanti's dialogues are not in tune with the tastes of the present generation. One couldn't believe that Devi Sri Prasad scored such mediocre tunes. Some of the stunts are good and similarly some comedy scenes. Saravanan's cinematography is good. Production values of Studio Green are good.

Analysis

Director Suraj who came out with an outdated plot and script along with screenplay failed totally. Except for the first scene nothing evokes interest, as everything evaporates from then on. Comedy track is outdated and slow and sometimes it goes out of sync with the storyline. Some of the 'A' rated and double meaning dialogues of Karthi along with Santanam sisters may impress masses. Comedy track in second half is similar to Gabbar Singh. Suraj planned to make an out and out mass entertainer with Karthi, but failed miserably in the execution. There is no thrill factor and it was like a 1980 movie with predictable plot. Climax is weak and dialogues did not help the cause in any manner.

Plus Points

Karthi action

Santanam comedy

Gabbar Singh comedy track

Minus Points

Outdated boring story

Weak story, Screenplay, Direction

Music

Slow pace

Final Talk

Bad Boy may fare badly at box office.

Sanjay Dutt sentenced to 5 years New Delhi, March 21: The Supreme Court Thursday upheld the death sentence of Yakub Abdul Razak Memon in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case and commuted the death sentence of 10 others. The apex court also upheld the conviction of Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt under the Arms Act in the terror attack and sent him to five years in prison. While confirming the death sentence of Yakub Memon, the bench of Justices P. Sathasivam and B.S. Chauhan said he and other members of the Memon family had played a predominant role in the execution of the conspiracy that led to 13 serial bomb blasts in Mumbai on March 12, 1993, claiming 257 lives and leaving 713 injured. While commuting the death sentence of the 10 other convicts to life imprisonment, the court said that they were mere subservients in the execution of the conspiracy. The humble and underprivileged background of these 10 accused, who were mere instruments in the hands of "principal perpetrators", were counted as mitigating circumstances by the court. The court said that if Memons were the archers of the conspiracy these 10 were just arrows. The judges also slammed Pakistan for aiding and abetting the acts of terrorism in infringement of international obligation as a member of United Nations.Dutt was asked to surrender in four weeks. The actor, who was convicted under the Arms Act for illegally possessing weapons, had been awarded six years imprisonment by the TADA (Terrorists and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act) court. However, the apex court reduced the sentence from six years to five years. This effectively means that Dutt will be in jail for three years and six months as he has already undergone 18 months imprisonment. The court also came down heavily on Mumbai police and customs officers at all levels. But for their wrong actions the 1993 bombings could have been avoided.A TADA court had in 1993 awarded death sentence to 12 people, including Memon. One of them has passed away. The court had also sentenced 20 to life imprisonment and 46 others, including Sanjay Dutt, were given varying terms of imprisonment. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had faced flak for not challenging the TADA court verdict acquitting Sanjay Dutt of charges under the TADA but convicting him under the Arms Act and sentencing him to six years imprisonment. However, in the course of the hearing of his appeal, the CBI had opposed the actor's plea challenging his conviction and sentencing.A series of 13 car bomb blasts had ripped through Mumbai on March 12, 1993. The locations that were targeted included landmarks such as fisherman's colony in Mahim Causeway, Zaveri Bazaar, Sahar Airport, Air India building, Hotel Juhu Centaur, the Bombay Stock Exchange Building and the Passport Office. The TADA court trial court of Justice P.D. Kode had commenced the trial Nov 4, 1993, and pronounced its 4,230 page verdict on July 31, 2007.Why was Sanjay's sentence reduced?Sanjay Dutt's sentence was reduced as he was directly not involved in the terrorist acts. He was arrested for possessing weapons illegally. He was found to have acquired an AK 47 assault rifle. As the weapons were supplied to him by persons having terror links, he was implicated in the Mumbai blasts. However, his sentence was reduced as he had no previous criminal record, his lawyers said. It is learnt Sanjay Dutt might move a review petition on the judgment. Sanjay Dutt's sister Priya Dutt was sitting in the court sad-faced, when the judgment was delivered. Sanjay Dutt is the son of late Sunil Dutt and veteran actress Nargis. Sanjay Dutt, known as an honest person, had not interfered in the prosecution of his son, despite being a senior Congress leader.

New York, March 16: Dr. Kallam Anji Reddy was born in Tadepalli in Guntur district, AP. His father was a farmer. He studied in ZPHS School, Nutakki until 10th grade, graduated from AC College, Guntur in 1958, B.Sc (Tech) from Bombay University, Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the National Chemical Laboratory, Pune in 1969.

Dr. Reddy started his career in Indian Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Limited (IDPL) (1969–1975), then he left the job to found Uniloids Ltd in 1976, founded Standard Organics Limited (SOL) in 1980, before founding Dr Reddy's Labs in 1984 with an initial capital of Rs 25 lakh and he is worth $1.4 Billion US Dollars. Under his leadership, DRL has been a pioneer and trendsetter in the Indian Pharmaceutical industry.

Here are some of the highlights of his life:

Contribution to Hyderabad Growth:

In 1970s, Pharma industry was not that big in Hyderabad and there were only handful of companies. Those companies used to produce the medicines for people of AP and all those were basic medications. Dr. Anji Reddy was the pioneer for Pharma Industry, who brought the Pharma Industry to India and put the Hyderabad in world map much before the IT industry. At some point of time, 80% of World Ibuprofen drug consumption was being produced in Hyderabad. All the credit for this goes to Dr. Anji Reddy. Dr. Reddy has given employment to thousands of families in Hyderabad directly and lakhs of families benefited indirectly and touched millions of people around the world through his medicines.

To give you an example, when USA worried about Swine Flu, USA looked at Andhra Pradesh to get the medication for entire USA. Within a short period of time, AP has sent the shipments to USA. That is the power of AP Pharma industry now. Hetero Drugs has supplied that medication. Even when IT industry has ups and downs, Hyderabad did not face the down turn because Pharma industry is stable. I do not have the numbers but 20% of Hyderabad growth can be credited to Pharma Industry.

Inspirational to several:

Dr. Anji Reddy has been inspirational to several industrialists in Andhra Pradesh. Some of the Industrialist were fortunate to work directly with him and some industrialists were indirectly inspired by him and started Pharma industries with confidence. There are hundreds of Ancillary units to Pharma industry. Whole Pharma Industry should be thankful to him. Hundreds of industrialists in Hyderabad either worked in Dr. Reddy Labs or supplied products to DRL. Hetero Drugs Parthasarathi Reddy, Aurabindo Ram Prasad Reddy, Divi Labs Murali, Virco Narayana Reddy and Venkata Reddy have worked for him and started the companies on their own. It is very hard to find a pharmacy company owner who did not work for Dr. Reddy.

Gave financial support to several:

Dr. Anji Reddy has given employment to hundreds of families in 1980s, later become thousands and lakhs in 1990s. Thousands of families directly benefited by this and because of the employment, these families were able to afford higher studies for their kids and relatives. This was indirect help to thousands of families and he was The God to several families. I personally know a lot of families, who did not have basic education to get the job, but they got the jobs in 1980s and 1990s and now their families are rich and living in high standards. They are very fortunate to have an Industrialist like Dr. Anji Reddy.

Cost of the Drugs:

Most of the drugs are invented in Developed countries like USA, Germany and they charge very high prices. If you convert the same dollars and try to sell for the same price, not even one percent of the people in India can afford it. This is where Dr. Reddy made a difference, Hyderabad became a Pharma hub and most of the medicines are being produced in AP. Even though Dr. Reddy has been selling for higher prices to US companies, Reddy Labs has been selling for nominal cost in India. This is not only in India but also other developing countries in Africa and Asia got benefited by this. Because of this philosophy, medicine costs were down and even poor people can afford medication. This is how Dr. Reddy touched millions of people around the world.

Charitable Contributions:

After few years and seeing ups and downs of life, Dr. Reddy started Nandi Foundation. To give you an example, Dr. Reddy bought Mercedes Benz S500 at his earlier years and only two other people (Dheerubai Ambani and RP Goenka) had that car in India at that time. He bought Honda Accord in his later days and his son Mr. Satish Reddy asked why do not you buy latest car and he said instead of spending one crore on the good car, I will buy Honda Accord and the balance amount could be donated to Nandi Foundation so that poor people can be benefited.  Through Nandi foundation, he has helped various water purification plants and other poor people. He has helped LV Prasad eye institute also.

Awards:

Dr. Anji Reddy has received so many awards. Here are some of awards: “Padma Bhushan” one of the highest civilian Award by Indian Government in 2011, Padma Shri in 2001, Sir PC Ray award (1984 and 1992), Businessman of the Year in 2001; CHEMTECH Foundation  'Hall of Fame' award in 2005.

My personal experience:

As a family friend, I had the privilege to meet him few times and closely observe him since 1980s. I know hundreds of families who worked for him and got benefited. We had a good conversation about the American Universities and he shared his USA experiences with me. He has visited USA several times and his son Sathish Reddy studied in USA. He has inspired me and encouraged me to come to USA for higher studies. I am always thankful to him from bottom of my heart.

I am sure his son Satish Reddy has big shoes to fill in and he has been helping DRL. I wish him good luck and hoping that he will carry the legacy of his father Dr. Anji Reddy. We all miss Dr. Reddy and Andhra Pradesh would not see a Visionary Industrialist like him. May his soul rest in peace in heaven.

We generally see heroine's going semi-nude for their films, and that gets a lot of applause for the sex-appeal and glam quotient. This time our romantic hero is focusing on such thing and here goes the story.

For the upcoming Tamil film 'Theeya velaseyyanum kumaru', hero Siddarth is going shirt-less for the posters of the movie. If the similar thing is done by a heroine, we call it semi-nude and youths will be getting tempted after that. Maybe girls will be getting the same feeling after watching Siddu in that no-shirt look.

The guy beside Siddu is comedian Santhanam, and apple pie beauty Hansika is playing lead in this flick while veteran heroine Kushbu's husband Sundar C is the director.

Movie : Back Bench Student
Rating: 2/5
Cast : Mahat, Pia Bajpai, Archana, Brahmanandam, Ali and others
Directed by : Madhura Sridhar
Produced by : MVK Reddy
Banner : Shirdi Sai Combines
Music : Sunil Kashyap
Release Date : 2013-03-15

Director Madhura Sridhar's latest offering Back Bench Student has caught the attention of few eyeballs due to its packaging and promotion. The director was immensely confident over his product that he conducted a huge Premiere show for this film. However the results haven't turned up as expected.

What is it about?

Karthik (Mahat) is a poor student who doesn't take his future seriously. As a result he fails in studies as well as loses his girlfriend Priyanka (Archana). But he has few skills that would help him find a good job. Chaitra (Pia) helps him to find job and gives him hope. Now Priyanka returns into Karthik's life but he is already in love with Chaitra. How this triangle ends up is the rest of the story.

Performances:

Mahat is a poor choice to portray this role. He is weak in expressions and the awkward dubbing didn't do much good either. He tries too hard to impress but unfortunately he doesn't have it in him. Archana is alright. Should have taken care about her lip sync. Pia Bajpai's poor expressions failed to get the desired impact. Her character was supposed to be damsel in distress, but she lacks talent to pull it off. Brahmanandam and Ali are wasted. Rest of the star cast did okay in their respective roles.

Technicalities:

Madhura Sridhar targeted young audience yet again. But his imaginative skills and narrative skills are pretty limited. He has noble ideas but couldn't convert them into a good film. He has failed as a writer and director and also is an utter disaster in getting the desired output from his team. Music by Sunil Kashyap is a pain. None of the songs are good and the background score is sheer torture. Cinematography is inconsistent, but never goes up beyond below average mark. Editing is very poor. Production values are okay.

Analysis:

Back Bench Student is like a film made with a team of back benchers. None of the team have put up their hand to pull this off. Story starts off an alright note and treads along in an okay manner for few minutes. But the director is left clueless after sometime. Meaningless scenes and aimless direction makes things worse for Back Bench Student. The film's fate is evident by interval point.

Any hopes of a better second half dies down immediately as the film heads in a predicable path with mediocre scenes. Anybody could guess the climaxand director made valiant efforts to make it watchable but in vain. Ali and Brahmanandam are thrown in to lift the hopes up, but neither of them could help the ship from sinking. Few dialogues are good and that is the only bright side in this film.

Attractive title might help the film to get some collections in the opening weekend, but it doesn't possess anything worthy to stand tall at the box office. Back Bench Student is Madhura Sridhar's weakest film till date.

Verdict: Back Bench Student fails in all aspects!
