Dublin,
Dec 19: Ireland has decided to bring a legislation to allow abortions
in hospitals when doctors determine that a mother's life is at risk.
The
Catholic nation has taken the decision in view of world-wide protests
over the horrible death of an Indian dentist from pregnancy related
complications, when doctors refused to perform abortion, because of the
strict Catholic rules prohibiting it.
Savita Halappanavar
(31) a Karnataka-born dentist was rushed to a Galway hospital following
complications when she was 17 weeks pregnant. But doctors refused to
terminate her pregnancy. Savita died of septicaemia, three days after
requesting a termination. Her husband has alleged that Savita died
because doctors could do nothing as Ireland was a Catholic country.
Abortion
is banned in Ireland as per a papal diktat. Savita's case drew
world-wide criticism of the inhuman rule, forcing Ireland to amend the
law.
