Hyderabad,
May 24: TDP has complained to the Election Commission of India that the
Sakshi newspaper owned by the YSR Congress chief Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy
was publishing news favorable to the party candidates and distributing
copies free of cost in the constituencies where by-elections were being
held on June 12, in the State.
In
a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner, party official
spokesperson and MLA K S Ratnam has stated that publication of such news
came under the definition of ‘Paid News’ and distribution of the
newspaper free of cost was nothing but bribe which attracts action under
Section 123 (1) of the Representation of People Act, 1951 and Section
171-B, 171-E of the Indian Penal Code.
He
said the said acts amount to electoral offences and corrupt practices
and hence Sakshi newspaper and YSR Congress were liable for penal action
under the RP act, 1951 and IPC.
He
requested the CEC to direct the Election authorities in the
constituencies to take immediate steps to stop distribution of Sakshi
Telugu newspaper free of cost and initiate appropriate penal action
against the management of the newspaper and leaders of the YSR Congress
party, who were indulging in the electoral offences and corrupt
practices.
