Bollywood has seen some of the finest biopics in Indian Cinema. While many had come in the past, and more (Neerja, Azhar, Sarabjit) have come in the recent times and many more (Dangal, Dhoni, Sachin, Kishore Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Rani Laxmi Bai and etc ) are yet to come, Tollywood is now slowly adapting to the trend.
The latest we hear is that a biopic on legendary actress Savitri would be filmed soon. The life of yesteryear heroine Savitri, who earned the sobriquet of Mahanati, will be chronicled by young filmmaker Nag Ashwin who made a decent debut with Yevade Subramanyam.
Born on January 4, 1936, Savitri made her acting debut in 1950 Telugu-Tamil drama Samarasam, and went on to star in several classics such as Devadasu, Missamma, Penin Perumai, Pasa Malar, Bhale Ramudu, 'Thodi Kodallu, Mayabazaar and Gundamma Katha. Besides donning the greasepaint, Savitri also directed a few films such as Chinnari Papalu, Chiranjeevi and Mathru Devatha. She was even a popular playback singer. Subsequently, her personal life saw lows and pushed her into depression.
It's learnt that the movie wouldn't touch the dark side of her life and would focus more on the happier times of her and her contribution to cinema. There's no clue on who's going to play the protagonist. The yet-to-be-titled film will be made simultaneously in Telugu and Tamil. The film could be called as a tribute to first lady superstar of Telugu Cinema. -
