Melbourne: Worried over his permanent residency status in Australia, an Indian-origin man committed suicide in Melbourne last weekend, a media report said on Tuesday.
In his mid-30s, Deepak Singh was found dead in his car on July 17, sbs.com.au reported.
"He told me he was worried because he couldn't get a permanent residency in Australia due to change in rules," Jasvinder Sidhu, a prominent member of the Punjabi community in Melbourne and Singh's friend, was quoted as saying.
Singh, who arrived in Australia as an international student in 2008, got married to an Australian woman and was living on a temporary visa.
He secured a diploma in community service and completed his placement at the Tarneit Sikh Temple in Victoria.
His application for a permanent visa on the basis of his marriage was rejected by the government on the grounds that the relationship did not seem genuine. An appeal in the Migration Review Tribunal was also subsequently rejected, the report said.
According to Singh's friends, he did not have enough money to hire a lawyer to fight his case.
Afraid that he would be deported, Singh met Sidhu a couple of months ago and asked him to begin a programme to help Indian students who get stranded in such situations.
"He was under acute stress as he thought after spending years in Australia, he couldn't go back to India or continue to stay in Australia. Last time I met him, I could see the stress in his eyes. He was under a lot of pressure," Sidhu noted.
Apparently, Singh had also expressed his dejection on Facebook, said one of his friends.
MELBOURNE: A 31-year-old Indian woman and her four-month-old son have died after she allegedly jumped from the balcony of their high-rise apartment in Melbourne along with the baby.
Supraja Srinivas and her son Shrihan died on the spot. Their bodies were found in the atrium of the 29-storey City Point apartment building last Thursday.
According to media reports, the family of the deceased was now planning to take their bodies to India.
It is believed that Supraja committed suicide, the report said.
Supraja's husband, Gannaram Srinivas, an IT engineer working with Tech Mahindra, collapsed at the scene and was admitted to hospital.
The couple also have a five-year-old daughter.
Victoria Police spokeswoman said it was believed the woman and child may have fallen from an internal balcony. The spokeswoman said police were not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident

In yet another shocking death of Telugu students living in the US, a young man named Sankeerth from Kachiguda, Hyderabad was brutally stabbed to death by his fellow Telugu roommate Sai Sandeep Goud in Austin, Texas on Monday night.
According to the reports, Sankeerth went to the US to pursue his MS two years ago and secured a job recently after completing his studies. He used to share his room with with his childhood friend Praneeth in Texas.
Soon after getting the H1B visa in a draw system, Sankeerth secured a job in a local IT company three months ago and he, along with Praneeth, shifted to Austin. Two weeks ago, Sandeep joined them as their roommate through a consultant.
On Monday night, Sankeerth was stabbed by Sandeep for reasons unknown. Sankeerth was immediately rushed to a local hospital, where he was declared brought dead. Sankeerth's heartbroken parents and family members are trying to bring their son's body to Hyderabad.
